Andrew - the Second Fiddle Man

Andrew was one of the disciples who worked behind the scenes. They say no-one likes playing second fiddle, but Andrew didn't think this. Peter, his brother, was very aggressive and outspoken and it must have been a real challenge living with him. Andrew was in the second place, and always Peter was in the front. John says in his gospel "one of the two which heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother".

Andrew's response when he heard Jesus was to tell his brother. He may have thought that, if Peter became a disciple, he would want to run the group .... but this never entered his mind. He wanted Peter to come and see and hear Jesus. John says of Andrew, "He first findeth his own brother .... and he brought him to Jesus. (John 14:41-42). You see, he was more concerned to bring others, especially his brother, to Jesus than being in charge. Andrew did not strive for being a leader; he just wanted to introduce others to the Saviour.

Have you a brother? And have you brought him to Jesus? Have you told him about the Lord Jesus? Have you lived so that he would believe you? I am eternally grateful that my brother told me about Jesus and how that he had put his trust in Him, and my brother's life declared it. It was plain for me to see.

Yes, I like Andrew, for this reason, you find he brings others to Jesus. The lovely story in John chapter six tells of the hungering crowd, at the fading of the day, who were getting tired and hungry and they had no food to place before them. Now Andrew knew that Jesus could make much of little. He had seen the miracle in Cana where Jesus turned the water into wine. So he brings the lad with five loaves and two fishes, and from that lunch, Jesus created enough food to feed the vast crowd! In chapter 12 of John's gospel, we read of the Greeks who came to Phillip wanting to see Jesus and Phillip took them to Andrew and Andrew, apparently, "took them to Jesus".

Good Andrew. He didn't always know how Jesus would deal with any situation but he knew He could, so he kept bringing them to Him.

You might never be a "leader" but every disciple should have as priority number one, to bring others to Jesus. Yes, be one who leads others to Him. Most leaders wish they had more "Andrews" in their fellowship. We need them. When was the last time you told any unbeliever about Jesus?
