Where is Divine Truth?

The answer is – in the Scriptures, because the Bible is God’s revelation to man and the sum of all truth, that is, all we need to know and understand for our eternal benefit is in the Word of truth. “Thy Word is truth” said our Lord Jesus.

It is amazing how people spend time ‘searching for truth’ but who ignore the Bible. We do so at our peril. Canon Twells, in his lovely hymn ‘The Voice of God’s Creation’, says ‘it was the voice of revelation that met my utmost need’ and he was right.

Whittier, in his poem ‘Miriam’ puts it like this :-

We search the world for truth, we cull
The good, the pure, the beautiful
From graven stone and written scroll
And, weary seekers of the best
We come back laden from the quest
To find that all the sages said
Is in the Book our Mothers read.

God does not hide truth; He reveals it. When Peter and the other disciples were asked by our Lord Jesus “Who do you say I am”, Peter answered “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God”. “You are blessed” said Jesus “flesh and blood has not revealed this unto you but My Father who is in heaven!” We must inevitably come to the conclusion that the store house of divine revelation is the Scriptures.

The Bible is not a collection of men’s thoughts and aspirations. It is God’s disclosure about Himself and about us! Our origin, our purpose, our destiny is all plainly revealed.

I am eternally grateful that, from the very start of my Christian pilgrimage, I was encouraged to read and know what the Bible says. David said “Your Word makes the simple, wise!” It was so with me.

The Hebrew epistle tells us that God spoke ‘long ago’, i.e. in the Old Testament, and then in the New Testament ‘through His Son’.

In the Old Testament, God communicated with men in various ways – visions, prophecies, parables, types, ceremonies, theophanes and audible voice.

From the close of the Old Testament till the arrival of John the Baptist, God, it seemed, was silent for some 400 years. Just imagine that. No word from God for four centuries! Then that mysterious silence was shattered by the Baptist’s cry ‘Get ready, God is coming’! From that time on, God spoke through His Son.

The gospel shows how He did that. It’s the master story of all time. The book of Acts tells us how He built His church and the epistles apply His teaching to everyday living.

The Revelation tells that what God has started, He will finish; here it tells of the triumphant return of the Saviour King. It will be the consummation of Divine revelation. That’s why the Bible is so precious to the believer.

If you would be wise, read, learn and obey. All God’s blessings are wrapped up in this. Hide it in your heart. Show it in your life. You may do this, by His Spirit.
