We Was Robbed!
I think that this was the general opinion of the Wanderer’s fans at the Leicestershire Church Football League Cup Final played at the ‘Dovecote’, Shepshed Dynamo’s ground, on Saturday May 3rd.
Quorn dominated for virtually the whole game with many close shaves for Loughborough Emmanuel’s goalkeeper and only one real chance for Emmanuel which was cleared off the line. But at full time the score was nil-nil. Quorn had failed to grasp any of their chances and so we entered a period of extra time.
Unknown to the fans, Shepshed Dynamo wanted a quick end to the game, because they had a match booked for that afternoon. So the Referee and teams agreed to play sudden-death rather than 15 minutes each-way. Quorn conceded a direct free kick and the wall lined up in front of our goal. Emmanuel’s shot was deflected by Tony Smith, who valiantly put his head in the ball’s way. Unfortunately it deflected into the back of the net.
We were puzzled when Emmanuels’ fans suddenly rushed onto the pitch, but the news slowly trickled back to us about the sudden-death decision. In terms of performance, Emmanuel did not deserve to win. Under the original rules, Quorn would have had chance to pull back. But in life the race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong ... but time and chance happen to them all (Eccl 9:11).
QB Wanderers acquitted themselves well, and it was an attractive game only lacking in goals.
The team that day were: Gianni Albiniano, Tony Smith, Will Sutton, Micky Papparozzi, Ross Patman, Dan Reeve, Ryan Patman, Paul Dakin, Brendan Coulson, Keith Dakin, Andrew Laszcz, Jamie Burdett, Damian Kirk, Dean Smith and Merlin Rigard.
