Seed Carriers
Most of us will probably enjoy a well earned holiday over August and September. A time for refreshment and building up resources for the autumn. But if I said to you it’s actually a good time for seed sowing you’d probably think that I didn’t know much about horticulture or even nature. However I’m not talking about that sort of sowing. I’m talking about spiritual sowing.
I wonder how many times on holiday we find ourselves drawn into conversation with a complete stranger, with the possibility of sharing something of ourselves and perhaps something of our faith in Jesus. That seed may be the beginning of a great work for God.
There is a story told of a business man in Boston USA who was often away from home during the week and was therefore unable to take part in prayer meetings or Bible studies. So he decided that what he could do was to offer Sunday lunch to two people every week. He did this for over thirty years and so became acquainted with a great many people. When he died he was buried in a cemetery some thirty miles from his home so his business associates hired a train to take them all there. One coach on the train was especially for the folks he had entertained to Sunday lunch, one hundred and fifty of them, all of whom had become Christians.
As we here at QBC endeavour to become a purpose driven church, seed sowing is a vital part of our work and witness. And you - yes you - are called to sow seed regarding Jesus and the salvation He achieved at Calvary for all.
The scripture says, “anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? This is what the scriptures mean when they say “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! (Romans 10:13-15 NLT)
So it seems to me that we all are being sent to sow seeds by speaking of Jesus everywhere, anywhere and wherever we find ourselves. The rest - conviction of sin, repentance, acceptance of forgiveness, salvation - are the work of the Holy Spirit. We are just seed carriers, during the holidays and always.
