A First Visit - British Legion Concert

I have been told that education never ends and I was certainly educated on the evening of 12th July. I had no idea of what I was walking into, a night out and what a night. The Heart of England Orchestra lived up to their enormous talents and if you weren’t into classical music, you certainly appreciated it by the end of the evening.

The music was lively, and cheerful, ranging from Bizet, and Khachaturian to Strauss and “modern” Jerome Morass - he was in my heyday! Soprano singer Diane Sharp set the crowd going with Rule Britannia, and Pomp and Circumstance. We weren’t quite as mad as the last night of the proms, but all waved Union Jacks.

The Quorn branch of the British Legion did us proud with their variety of music and what can I say about the “presenter” - handsome, witty and understandable - full marks Howard!

The evening was rounded off with a magnificent display of fireworks, which were heard and seen by most of Quorn. For us oldies the display by a Spitfire brought back memories.

Around 5pm crowds of people began to arrive setting up tables with crystal glass, china plates, food galore and even hanging night lights and chandeliers. there was Champagne, wine and a wonderful mixture of age groups. Quite a sight and as darkness fell the atmosphere of candles, night lights with singing was something else.

I brought my plastic plates, dishes and cultlery, which Gillian and I enjoyed eating from as we indulged in strawberries and cream.

Will I go again? Yes I will, bringing my plastic utensils - but next time it will be linen napkins.
