Gideons' Encouraging Work

On Saturday evening on the 21st August, Phyllis, Anne, Janet and Doris decided to attend the “Gideons Friends” Meeting at Barrow Baptist Church. When we arrived we had a very warm welcome. About fifty people attended.

Alan Warren opened the meeting and introduced a young man for Nigeria, over here studying Airport Design. back in his own country he does work for the Gideons. Hundreds of Gideon Bibles are distributed to young people, hotels and prisons, as they are here.

We sang two lovely hymns “Great is thy Faithfulness” and “Jesus is Lord”, which really rang through the hall and was a great pleasure to sing. Mrs Fiona Pawson was introduced and told about her work for Gideons in Worcestershire. She has worked in men's prisons for Gideons, but this was eventually passed on to a male worker. She now works only in women's prisons. After giving out the Bibles, more and more women became interested, and she now runs a Bible study in an inmate’s cell.

One of the special features she mentioned was of a change in the young women’s outlook on life, even one who since she became a Christian has admitted her guilt and has confessed it even though it means a longer sentence in prison for her.

Mrs Pawson told us many more interesting things that are happening within the discussion group that she is leading, and they seem to be making good progress for a better life.

We all had to admire such a dedicated and enthusiastic young lady.

We then sang “To God be the glory”. After a closing prayer we were given a very appetizing home-made buffet and everyone joined in friendly chat, which made a nice end to a lovely evening.
