Our Priceless Inheritance
The Christian, according to the “Great mercy of God”, receives a priceless inheritance. It is a royal inheritance. It is pure and undefiled and kept in Heaven beyond the reach of change or decay – that’s wonderful! Unlike earthly treasure, it cannot be taken away from you. Of course, it is unique among treasures and God, by His mighty power, will make sure you arrive in Heaven to receive it. It is yours to enjoy throughout eternity. You see, it’s imperishable; it’s unable to decay; it’s undefiled, untouched by sin and will never fade.
Alas, earthly treasures, all of them, are eventually lost! Bank accounts, stocks, shares and all so called investments eventually are lost. Whatever men save, it can be stolen. The value of stocks and shares can fall or, most certainly, death will separate it from you. Now, our Lord Jesus said expressly ‘Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. Lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal’. (Matthew 6:19-20).
You see, the influence of sin and corruption applies to other things as well as ‘finances’. The whole creation is subject to futility. Just nothing on earth escapes sin’s corruption! It’s a staggering thought; an amazing fact. All earthly treasure will be gone forever!
Alas, so many, even some Christians, pursue perishable things and miss the joy of eternal riches. The truth is, when you receive the Lord Jesus as Saviour and Lord, you become a new creation and you become an heir of God and a joint heir with our Lord Jesus. That’s why it’s priceless!
You, as a real Christian, are different. You now live to serve your God and King, not worldly pleasures or goals.
Now, this royal inheritance (and no-one can imagine its fullness, the things God has prepared for us are wonderful beyond telling), the scriptures tell us, this inheritance is reserved for us and, the wonder is, we are reserved for it!
It’s protected in glory - and to glory is where God will bring every dear believer. Then all the fullness of salvation, glorification, a dwelling in Heaven, Heaven where nothing is defiled, will be yours. Yes, dear believer, it’s kept for you, it’s your inheritance through our Lord Jesus.
Now note. There is another inheritance. The awful words of Jesus tell of this. Unbelievers will receive their inheritance – read Matthew 25:41-46 ‘they will go away to eternal punishment but the righteous to life eternal’.
If you do not have the royal inheritance, it will be the inheritance of judgement eternal. Oh, lay up treasures in Heaven; earth will pass away. Lay up treasure in abundant measure for the great accounting day.
No wonder Peter says in his epistle ‘in this you rejoice greatly’ (1 Peter 1:5). Because of our eternal inheritance, all things temporal are triumphed over. Look beyond the temporal trials to the glory of our inheritance. This joy transcends human circumstance.
May the treasure and the joy be yours. God bless you,
This little article was prompted by Howard’s reference to the hymn “Be Thou my vision”. The line “be my inheritance now and always” spoke to my heart. I went home from worship to meditate.
